GAS PIPELINE INSPECTOR
ATHENS UTILITIES -GAS DEPARTMENT
Job Requirements include, but are not limited to the following: High School diploma/GED. 18 years or older. Valid Alabama Driver's license. Evidence of safe driving record and insurability. Valid Master or Journeyman Pipe Fitters License or ability to obtain. Valid Plastic Piping Certificate and Gas System Operators Qualification or ability to obtain. Knowledge of physical operation of high capacity regulators and gas meters. Knowledge of basic electronics. Must successfully complete (OQ) Operator Qualification modules and Training as it relates to all covered Task this position requires. Three to five years' experience in gas utility construction and maintenance. Five years' experience in gas operations and locating underground facilities. Must have ability to pass all operator qualifications and skills tests. Requires specific training to meet Gas Pipeline Safety and DOT regulations. Knowledge of natural gas distribution, including technical principles and skills to apply knowledge. (Can be acquired on the job.) Knowledge of Gas Department's Operations and Maintenance plan. (Can be acquired on job) Knowledge of DOT Regulations, particularly Sec. 191 & 192. (Can be acquired on job). Skill and ability to know and understand Safety Regulations regarding the following equipment; backhoe trencher, boring machine, air compressor and electrical equipment and al other related to Gas Department operations. Ability to make sound independent decisions on whether to repair a leak or request repair crew assistance. Strong math skills to calculate meter readings and interpret formulas. Ability to monitor and calculate gas flow. (Can be learned on the job. Strong mechanical aptitude and abilities. Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, and communication skills. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation. Ability to work successfully in inclement weather, high traffic areas, and high noise areas. Body mobility to climb on top of and under equipment and in and out of manholes, pipes, and ditches. Ability to stand for long periods of time and to walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Ability to perform recurring walking, standing, pushing, squatting, bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, stretching, crawling, climb tall ladders, and lifting of up to 50 pounds or more regularly. Ability to operate electric, motorized, and hand-held machines, equipment, and tools safely. Extensive knowledge of gas pipeline safety. Ability to recognize potential safety hazards. Knowledge of emergency procedures. Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety rules and manuals. Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR. (May be acquired on the job). Requires significant flexibility relative to work hours. Must be willing to work holidays, overtime, non-standard work hours, shifts, and weekends as necessary. Must be willing to be on-call. Ability to attend training classes to include pipe infusion, leak detection, locating etc. Salary Range: $ 19.70/hr.--$26.67/hr. Closing Date: 11/22/17 @ 4:30 pm City Application Required.
